YB Components are proud to supply products from two of the longest serving manufacturers of gearboxes and geared motor units in the world. Zurrer and Bauer have been producing gearboxes and related products for almost a combined two hundred years, so here is a little tribute to their enduring quality.
Zurrer Gearboxes
Based in Stallikon-Zürich in Switzerland, Zurrer celebrated their centenary anniversary just a few years ago. Over the course of their hundred-plus years of manufacturing, they have grown into one of the most reputable producers of gearboxes and geared motors in Europe.
They are still a family-controlled company and boast a wide range of Zurrer gearboxes and geared motor products which are distributed around the UK and the rest of the world by the UK’s leading gearboxes supplier, Yorkshire-based YB Components.
Originally founded in 1916, they first specialised in the manufacturer of model electric locomotives, as well as motors and transformers. In the late 1940s, Zurrer began manufacturing industrial Zurrer geared motors and have since gone from strength to strength to become one of the leading manufacturers of high precision spur-bevel and planetary gears, AC, DC motors and servomotors, plus a number of accessories and drivers.
The worm version of Zurrer gear motors are particularly popular as they are designed with a low backlash feature which makes them ideal for a number of demanding applications.
Zurrer also manufacture ATEX-certified gears, featuring both the ATEX 95 equipment directive (94/9/EC) and the ATEX 137 workplace directive (99/92/EC) certifications. The former is for any equipment or protective system intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The latter represents a series of minimum health and safety requirements to protect workers at risk from explosive atmospheres.
Bauer Suppliers
Bauer began a little later in 1927 when Wilhelm Bauer started his own electric motor business near Stuttgart in Germany. Bauer began by developing his own gear motor design for a high-speed electric motor controlled by a gearbox. Later, his son Eberhaud took over the business and instigated an expansion of the business including mass production of the Bauer gear-motors originally conceived by his father.
During the 1960s and 1970s, production costs in Germany were very high which prevented Bauer opening more factories at home. However, the company didn’t stagnate and instead focused on increasing production in their subsidiaries abroad. Eberhaud’s own son took over the company in the mid-1980s and continued the good work of his father and grandfather.
By the turn of the millennium, Bauer had merged with Danish company, Danfoss, to become the Danfoss Bauer that the company was known as until 2011. It was in 2011 that the merged firms decided that the gearboxes suppliers like Yorkshire’s YB Components shipped all over the world would be known once again as just Bauer, in honour of the long history of their high quality gear motor products.
