Who are Fafnir Bearings?

The original Fafnir Bearing Company was founded in Connecticut (USA) in 1911 by Howard S. Hart. Fafnir is now part of The Timken Company, under which the “Fafnir” bearing line continues.

Fafnir is particularly recognised for its ball bearings and mounted bearing solutions, with products available in various configurations, sizes, seals, and specifications to suit different machinery requirements. These bearings are commonly used in applications where accuracy, durability, reduced friction, and reliable rotational performance are essential.

What Types of Bearings do Fafnir Manufacture?

Deep-Groove Ball Bearings: Including standard radial and precision versions.

Angular-Contact Ball Bearings: Designed to handle combined radial and axial loads, particularly in high-speed applications.

Spindle Bearings: High-precision bearings used in machine-tool spindles.

Ball-Screw Support Bearings: Designed for the support of ball screws in precision machinery.

Mounted Ball Bearings: A major part of the Fafnir range, supplied as complete bearing-and-housing units.

Pillow Block Bearings: One of Fafnir’s most common mounted bearing types.

Flanged Bearing Units: Including 2-bolt, 3-bolt and 4-bolt flange units.

Take-Up Units: Commonly used on conveyors where the shaft position needs to be adjusted.

Flangette Units: Compact pressed-steel mounted bearing units, often used for lighter-duty applications.

Cylindrical Cartridge Bearings: Designed to fit into a machined housing.

Do Fafnir produce "Super-Precision" bearings?

These are specialized machine-tool ball bearings engineered to extreme tolerance standards, including ABEC 7 (ISO P4) and ABEC 9 (ISO P2) precision classes. They are built to minimize heat and vibration under immense RPM workloads.

What do the codes "ZZ" and "2RS" actually mean?
ZZ (or 2Z): Indicates that the bearing has two metal shields (one on each side).

2RS: Indicates that the bearing has two rubber seals (one on each side), usually made of nitrile rubber (NBR) bonded to a steel insert.
