Whether you use Sitex fl couplings, SItex st couplings, Sit couplings, or just about any other type of coupling, there are a number of things you should consider when using couplings in any application.
As we wrote in a blog in 2014 titled ‘Advice for Selecting the Right Coupling’, choosing the right type of coupling for application in hand is essential. However, selecting the right make, model and size of coupling is just one of many ways equipment operators can optimise application efficiency though couplings.
Take a look at the following five tips for using couplings to optimise application efficiency.
- Consider coupling mounting with care
As Machine Design advises, the way you choose to mount a coupling on the shaft can directly influence the successful or unsuccessful outcome of the coupling. For unidirectional applications with minimal reversing or shock loads, traditional keys, keyways and taper brushings tend to work well.
- Inadequate torsional stiffness
Operators should also be conscious of using a coupling that lacks sufficient torsional stiffness. As couplings are the most compliant components in a system, operating one with inadequate torsional stiffness can result in resonance and ultimately failure.
- Be aware of under or overrating couplings
Put simply, using a coupling which has a torque rating that is insufficient for the application can damage or even break the coupling. By the same token, if a coupling is selected that has a torque rating higher than what is required, it is likely to be unnecessarily stiff and less flexible, thus reducing the efficiency of the coupling.
- Avoid coupling misalignment
According to Coupling Tips, one of the biggest challenges when using couplings involves the types and degree of misalignment in the application or system. As the correct selection of couplings cannot be made without a comprehensive understanding of the misalignment addressed in the application, operators should ask themselves vital questions, such as is the misalignment parallel or angular.
- Shock absorption or dampening
To help optimise the efficiency of couplings in a given application, Coupling Tips also advise that operators should consider whether the application requires dampening or shock absorption.
