Advice on avoiding coupling failure

screws-600491_640

From Enemac couplings to Falk couplings, industrial couplings have a primary function of connecting rotating shafts for the transfer of rotary torque and motion. As Ruland advises, similar to all mechanical equipment, a coupling must match its “intended purpose and application parameters, including many different performance, environmental, use and service factors.”

In order to help avoid the likes of Dinal gel couplings, Falk steelflex grid couplings and Dinal specialmatic couplings from failing, it is important to avoid making the following errors.

Choosing the incorrect type of coupling for the application

One of the biggest errors that leads to coupling failure is selecting the wrong type of coupling for a given application. When choosing a coupling for industrial use, you should consider various features including the torque, stiffness, application, misalignment, shaft mounting, space limitations, environmental factors and others. In help ensure the coupling works well and doesn’t undergo premature failure, all of this criteria should be closely considered.

Failing to address the misalignment of the coupling

Another key reason for coupling failure is when excessive misalignment is not corrected. As Rudland informs, due to the generation of loads which exceed the specifications of the likes of crowned tooth gear couplings and Desch couplings, the excessive misalignment between joining shafts is one of the principle reasons that couplings fail.

Whilst flexible shaft couplings are designed to compensate for varying degrees of flex, excessive misalignment is likely to lead to failure. It is therefore vitally important that if excessive misalignment does occur, it is corrected as soon as possible.

The importance of coupling maintenance

As YB Components wrote in a blog earlier this year, regardless of whether you are working with Jaure couplings, Orpex couplings, Habix couplings, or just about any other make of coupling, they need to be installed and maintained properly in order to avoid premature failure.

Maintaining couplings should include checking them regularly for signs of wear and tear, cleaning the couplings on a regular basis, keeping the couplings well lubricated and changing the lubricant regularly, and adequately documenting and dating the maintenance of the coupling.

If you are looking for a specific coupling for an industrial application then you are in the right place. Whether it’s Desch, Enemac, Din-Al, Jaure SIT, Kauermann, Kumera or Tschan, from large rigid couplings to small flexible ones, YB Components can find the right coupling for you.
